GB Coin is taking a somewhat more personal approach to getting British Citizens into the coin than other nation-based currencies — local, in-person workshops. Where they even take along a mining rig to show those who attend, all for free.
We spoke to Dave from the GB Coin team to ask how it went:
We aim to run free workshops throughout Britain where we help people understand this amazing technology and give each of them some coins to experiment with. Our first workshop went well where we invited six-formers from the local high-school to experience first-hand the benefits of cryptos.
He also explained why he felt an Airdop was not the best way to spread coins around:
Over the past few months there have been number of country coins with so-called airdrops. But, overall, we think the idea behind these airdrops is somewhat flawed; Auroracoin may be the exception because of the very small population. We think the logistics and cost of distributing digital coins to millions of people, is probably well beyond the average coin developer - certainly, well beyond us!
Not only that, the majority of people have little knowledge or limited understanding of crypto-currencies, so even if they received coins from a so-called airdrop, they would probably give them away or sell them quickly on one of the exchanges and thus driving down the price of the coin rapidly.
We decided to take a different approach. After a lot of research and some brainstorming, we decided the best approach was to educate people about the benefits of crypto-currencies and then give them some coins to play with… and the free crypto-currency workshops were born out of this idea.
I certainly agree that for somebody who has never used a cryptocurrency, getting a hands-on demonstration and seeing some of the computing power that goes into backing a coin’s network, they will most definitely come out with a better understanding.
If they come out of the other side with some GB Coin as their very first cryptocurrency, then I see that as a great step forward for everybody.
